At first I thought she just flat-out killed all of her friends and family, but did just chain them all up or forge letters from Twilight breaking things off or something else?

Celestia merely GROUNDED Twilight. Like, you can still sneak out after you’ve been grounded to see your friends, but lol that IS EXACTLY WHAT CAUSES EVERYTHING TO SUCK AAHAHAfuck
