I did the obligatory submit to EQD thing, kinda just to see what would happen, and it got put at the very bottom of a Music of the Day bargain bin post. Again. I don’t really have much to take from that really, it’s probably not a very good track to most people, and I’m honestly not bothered (More on that later) but it really puzzles me too.
The brony music craze has been going for a very long time now, longer than a lot of genre crazes last for, and it seems the debate on “what makes a ‘pony song’ a ‘pony song’” still goes on, and is one of the myriad of reasons why I stopped bothering with the music side of the fandom. It also makes me wonder why there are so many people still interested in it. Occasionally I will miss doing it, either from memories and nostalgia, or jealousy of seeing others still having fun doing it, but I look around and I just have to ask what the point is, why go to the effort of trying to prove that your track has some relevance to a concept that is surely tired by now, and therein limit your creativity, just to try and appeal to a limited, rapidly diminishing and potentially abstracted demographic?
I made that piece totally for fun, and as far as Im concerned it’s done better than it rightfully should have. A lot of people make content these days just for themselves or their friends, funny videos, silly goofy messed up tracks, bits of quirky art and so on, just to please a handful of people, and I love that. My musings have really just come about as an observation of the reaction post-release, and it isn’t the first time I’ve noticed this behaviour either.
Make an overly complex concept piece, even one that has lyrics, it’s not pony enough and gets shoved, make a fun piece using blatant tropes to make the point clear and have a weird triple pun title, gets shoved. Remix winter wrap up, spotlight single post feature 2014 brony superstar yolo swag.
I’m not trying to kick up a fuss, I just wanted to put down my thoughts. I’ve tagged this post shutuplav so if you don’t want to see any part of this discussion, add that to your blocked tags and it shouldn’t appear.
