One of the things I’ve wanted to do in this fandom is attend a con, partly to meet friends I’ve made online and partly for the sheer experience of it. BronyCon 2014 seemed like a perfect opportunity to do so, being one of the largest cons out there (which by corollary means I would likely see most…
this is actually sorta heart breaking :/
Bronycon’s policy changes allow them to treat musicians like VIP’s, giving them compensation for things like hotel room and travel, something the musicians complained about before. This is a good thing. However, Clavisound is 100% correct in this regard. Having an invitation system not only drastically lowers the chances of lesser-known musicians being able to perform at Bronypalooza, but heavily reinforces the notion that only the big names matter in this community.
Why Bronycon can’t have the application system like before, as well as giving better treatment to the performing musicians, is beyond me. The best Brony concerts have a good mixture of both the well-known talent, and the lesser-known talent. Unfortunately, Bronycon seems to have forgotten this.
My hope is that the Bronycon Musician Relations staff takes the time to invite the lesser-knowns as well as the big names, but I just don’t see that happening, and it’s extremely disappointing…
Welp there goes any fecking ounce of hope I had going to BC next August, let alone performing
God damn man
Oh come the fuck on guys!
Above everything Bronycon is a BUSINESS! They want to put on the most successful convention they can. Why do they invite show staff and voice actors? Because it draws people to come to the con! Why do they have musicians, rent a $1.2 Million dollar stage setup, and put on a massive concert? Because people want to come and see that!
Here’s the problem with that concert right now: it’s far too long. 22-24 hours of music in two days is incredibly long and stressful on funds, the staff, the sound crew, and the con goers. How do you make it shorter? Have fewer musicians. How to you do that when there are hundreds of musicians in this fandom? You only invite the ones that will draw the crowd.
Despite apparent popular opinion THIS IS HOW RUNNING A CON WORKS. You invite people that will draw people to your con. Yes there are lots of incredibly talented musicians in this fandom, including you guys Nexgen, Hardcopy, and Skyline, but to put on the best concert they can, they need to limit themselves.
You know who was one of the people pushing staff to go in this direction? Me. Despite the fact I’m a B or C tier musician in this fandom and might not get invited. I still want to see the best concert that we can produce. It’s attitudes like yours that reinforce the thinking that upcoming musicians are only in it for the popularity.
I listen to music too guys. You know what track I was looking forward too all year to hearing? dBPony playing Wonderbolt. I can’t tell you how crushed I was when Prince’s mic just flat out didn’t work. Problems like that, and trust me there were dozens, could be solved by a shorter concert and less people (and a better sound crew).
I’m personally thrilled to hear they’re taking my advice. Odds are that, if I’m not invited to perform, I’m going to be part of the staff running the concert. Heck I was almost staff this year since I put together the schedule of musicians. Grow up and see this for what it is: a Business making a smart decision about next year’s product.
Dylan, I owe you a beer.
Motherfuckers don’t have time for 100 C-list musicians to tickle you guys’ fancy anymore with their pony references.
Oh my fucking god I cannot believe…
You guys act like you fucking know everything about a real performance/concert lineup/festival/ any of that shit.
How about you get a fucking clue and you look at some of the most important and popular music festivals and conventions with music there are.
It is a BALANCE between the super popular musicians, the somewhat well known musicians, and the (as silva so rudely put it) “C-Listers”
The amount of hubris and insensitivity in the musician community is shocking and really really disappointing, considering how “down to earth” many of you guys claim to be. As someone who knows and is close to people who have planned/operated large concerts/music festivals (BFD, Not So Silent Night, Noise Pop, Outside Lands), I know that what you guys are claiming is bullshit.
Running a musical event like a business is not actually what people do. They actually take into consideration musicians that have less than 1000 subscribers (yes even at professional music festivals) and look for musicians/performers to promote and support to add variety. Many organizers/planners actually care about the art of music and performingand give lesser known musicians/DJs/producers/etc a shot.
So pull your head our of your vacuum-sealed assholes and give some respect to your fellow musicians.
Am I a C-Lister?
I hope so, that would be an upgrade…
