agonistagent replied to your post: Any thoughts on symbolism/themes/ideas that you included in Nightfall (obviously darkness is a symbol :-P)?
my philosophy class inspired me to pickup my fandom music analysis project again, hehe Hmm…

Alright, well, I’ll give this as best of a shot as I can. I sure hope that it doesn’t turn out long.

Let’s start out with the big thing.

Nightfall isn’t a story about Princess Luna.

—-STUPID LONG STORY AFTER THE BREAK—-

Heh, well, it’s super big and pretentious to start out like that, being that she is a very important role in it (she’s on the damn cover), but this is more a story about Celestia.

This is a story about mistakes.

I do change a few pieces in Nightfall Deluxe to better handle the story, but I’m very proud of the original regardless.

There was a major issue immediately after the fall of Discord. How could anyone ever divide infinite power evenly?

Celestia was noble for the strong will and unshakable mental capacity, whereas Luna was equally strengthened by her strong emotional will and (yet unknown) raw magical power. Of course a few bad things happen and shit flies down.

I pushed very hard the idea that Luna wasn’t ready to rule alongside Celly at the start. Luna lacked the poise to handle such a meticulous and important role, not because she wasn’t able to, but rather how quick both of them were to judge.

When the time came where not everyone would agree with Luna’s naïveté, Luna felt that she was pushed against a wall with her options. She could continue to rule alongside her sister and take the abuse, or the option was to run to her save haven and recuperate.

Too much at once. How could anyone god or mortal handle this much neglect?

In a fit of rage or spite, Celestia doesn’t stop her from running out. We all say things we don’t mean in stressful positions.

“I knew you’d go. You tried so hard to have the world look up to you, did it hurt that you would never be me?”

Luna was in tears most of The Darkest Night, but it drove the point that she wasn’t necessary when she saw her icon being controlled by Celestia.

This was her under control, and she was afraid.

It was then when she heard a voice.

“Don’t fear the dark, little one.”

“It’s a tragedy that your agony will only end in fright. Wouldn’t it be nice to let them all experience your everlasting nightmare on this night?”

To her, it was only fair. She gave in.

She fell asleep.

When she came to, she was already staring down her sister, after single handedly (shut up) taking Canterlot with a chaotic and dark magic.

Bitterness itself.

Disfigured, broken, desperate, meaningless and all filled up with emptiness, she was now a victim to the Bitterness.

Luna talked down to her sister, who just now LITERALLY WATCHED AS HER SISTER GOT RIPPED TO SHREDS BY DARK MAGIC. Celestia watched Luna die in front of her. Luna’s last words before an eternal night were telling Celestia to run. Run as far as you can, because no one is in control anymore.

Celestia tries to use the Elements after gathering her strength in what little hopes to save her sister. It fails. Hard.

Their Harmony was broken beyond repair. It only broke Nightmare Moon/Luna in the physical sense. Celestia, trying to save her sister ended up nearly killing what little was left of her.

Celestia won the fight, but no one would call these circumstances a victory.

If only to save her life one last time, Celestia sends her into the Moon to recover her strength.

Celestia eventually grew to enjoy the idea of unary control, and after all the citizens loved her for saving the world, to bring Luna back would just invoke more trouble.

After generations, Luna was erased. Everything moved on.

She was forgotten.

Celestia waited in her throne room for one thousand years, waiting for the last day.

She knew what she did was wrong, and she welcomed retribution with the same poise that got her there. Nightmare Moon struck her down with the same anger that got her there.

Celestia was erased. Everything moved on.

Now, where were we?

———————————

Celestia, nor Luna were bad or had evil intentions. Everyone was just afraid. Luna was pushed into a corner and fought her way out. No one learned their lessons. Harmony was forgotten. Nothing had changed. Life moved on.

Celestia began mentoring students in hopes that no one would take after her lost example.

Oof. That was a lot, and that was just the overview of the original (not deluxe/remastered) story. Was there anything in specifics you wanted me to go over?
