No seriously, feel free to talk to me for whatever reason. Askbox is always open as well as Skype.

Nintendo should have honestly given a lot more time for players to mess around with this than what they gave, because with how little they got feedback’s probs not gonna be all that great.

>Nintendo should have honestly given a lot more time for players to mess around with this than what they gave, because with how little they got feedback’s probs not gonna be all that great.

The GTF wasn’t really meant to be akin to an Open Beta where they would measure out balances and work on those as their priority. Of course they would if they noticed something huge, but there was literally no variation of the equipment or stat boosters that gear would provide. It wasn’t meant to be a metric to balance, it very clearly was designed to test the servers under intense load at various times of the day. Primetime, Early Early Morning and Afternoon.

Condensing play to 1 hour increments would force people to play during those time if they were interested, stressing the servers even more. That was the primary purpose for the GTF, not balancing. They aren’t looking for balancing feedback, at least not presently or primarily. They’re trying to make sure that the game doesn’t crash and burn day one.

HELL YEAH!

Well even then they should have realized they could have used this to kill two birds with one stone and get a bunch of data for any last minute fixes out there. Even more than that this beta was an excellent opportunity for free advertisement of the game that would have surely increased their fanbase immensely if they’d allowed more time. It’s just another showing of Nintendo being kinda behind the times as this really was a good opportunity to really push this game’s fanbase to the extremest of amounts that they kinda failed to jump on with how little time they gave.

Let us say that there is 100,000 people that are interested in playing this game’s demo and they would be willing to go to any length to play it. Just a rough estimate, love. If they had a weeklong open-beta, that would be 24 x 7 hours, or 168 hours of play time.

Let us assume an even distribution of playtime. We can go more complex and write about population densities and hourly active records and all that good statistic stuff, but we don’t have to for this exercise.

If 100,000 people would play around 1 hour total across 168 hours, the servers would average about 595.2381 players at one time. Cool.

Maybe this would be good for -balancing- but this is very very clearly not what they intended.

Now, let’s force the players to play three 1 hour increments. 3 hours to simplify. If those same 100,000 people would play 1 hour of this no matter what, that would average about 33,333.33 players at one time.

Of course you’ll have those that’ll play for 3 hours and those that’ll play one match, but for our control there is a solid 5,499.9993% more stress on the server than the “Open Beta” version of this exercise.

There is no option to kill two birds with one testfire here. That would completely invalidate the point of the Server Stress Test.

There’s a good reason that major companies like Nintendo, EA and plenty of other publishers have a Closed or Open Beta to get data for the express purpose of balancing. This was not an open beta, love.

And knowing Nintendo, they probably had a closed beta of Splatoon running for a long time now. I wouldn’t put it past them…

Me when ppl complain about the roller

Git gud whiny piss babies. Us rollers have to work for turf and a kill if someone with a gun knows how to properly zone us.

Not really to be honest, if you have already created a large enough space of ink for a quick dash in Rollers have the edge a lot. That being said they’re not super OP, just an amazing weapon for beginners.

First off, a lot of area that is your turf is an edge for every class, not just splat rollers. Splat rollers just seem more deadly because it allows them to get closer faster, and they have that fear factor of death coming at you.

I actually went up against someone who knew how to handle rollers and I literally could do nothing for like, 30 or 45 seconds. He managed to mess up and I found an opening and took him out, but it cost a lot of time and he protected the top of the map on saltwater bay. I’ll admit that it was easy to play as, though, mostly because no one knows how to fight them yet except other splat rollers really.

The major thing to remember is to avoid corners, and dont stand at the edge of your turf. You need that buffer zone so rollers cant squid jump at you and get you instantly. As a roller, it was easy for me because a lot of people dont know how to handle rollers. But as a gunner, I knew how to handle rollers and barely got killed by them. I even went like, 12-2 against a team with 3 rollers and a splatter shot jr.

Its anything but OP, and can be very technical if the other team knows how to combat against splat rollers. The splat roller can be very satisfying and is only really good because right now its a major fear factor. I bet you anything that once the game is released and people can play more than one hour of the game, people will learn and it’ll become much harder for splat rollers to gain turf and kills without backup. A lot of people just get scared of them and make rookie mistakes and leave themselves open for a splat roller to take you out.

A lot of people are whining about the splat roller because they just havent had the time to adapt to them. I’ve had a team of 4 splat rollers and we got decimated in one match because the other team knew how to zone us correctly. The only reason we won that round was because one of us managed to get behind them while they ransacked our spawn and allowed us to jump to him so we could take a fuck ton of turf at the end since thats what splat rollers are best for, taking turf.

tl;dr Learn to zone, be careful around corners. leave a buffer zone in front of you so they cant squid jump at you, dont be afraid. Also dont blindly fire at them and waste ink you dont need to waste; don’t be afraid to wait around and do nothing but protect your turf if a splat roller is waiting for an opening. Push them back and keep your distance and you’ll be fine, kids.

Obviously everything is context sensitive and you wont be able to mind these rules all the time, just do your best and be a team player.

That’s basically what I was saying and any good Zone player can easily be stopped by teamwork or just unconventional play. As I said it’s not that the weapons super OP it’s just the best weapon for beginners so in a two day beta test full of…well… beginners, it’s gonna look and be the most OP out of all the classes. While altogether it’s kinda just the Pyro from TF2, and a lot of the time you could just WM1 people to death with it just because no one knew what they were doing or understood the game to a large enough extent with so little time to play.
To be honest that’s the biggest problem with this Beta trial is that there just wasn’t enough time to really play it and understand it. Hardly anyone probably tried to pick up the Sniper because it had the highest skill gap, most people only really got time to get used to the rollers or splattershot jr.s there just needed to be a larger window for the community to actually get a feel for what it’s gonna be like and what they think is good and bad with it, so the Rollers just ended up being the “this is OP because it’s the first day” kinda weapon.

Nintendo should have honestly given a lot more time for players to mess around with this than what they gave, because with how little they got feedback’s probs not gonna be all that great.

HELL YEAH!

People are complaining about the roller? Bah, they just don’t know how to properly plan around it because a weapon like the roller hasn’t really been present in all other arena shooters so no one knows how to capitalise tactics. God forbid you have to develop some new skillz.

Scroll Back

Gaming study by itaykeren looks at the subject of how scrolling works in 2D video games, the hidden design methods which control the presentation of levels around the playable character:

… I was quite surprised that camera work, a subject with more than 30 years of history in games, was hardly discussed.

Scrolling or Panning refers to any attempt to display a scene that is larger than what fits in a single screen. There are many potential challenges with scrolling, like choosing what the player needs to see, what we as designers would like the player to focus on, and how to do it in a way that’s fluid and comfortable for the player.

While I’m going to focus on 2D camera systems, many of these general concepts apply to 3D as well.

The study provides various GIF examples like the ones above, and should be of interest to anyone involved with Game Design.

Imo rollers are the best at covering the map but since they're melee they need ranged back up or they'll just get picked off by the guns
