I bought Rise Against’s last album on iTunes like half a year ago and the song Gaslamps on it was labeled as iTunes exclusive and in iTunes DRM ridden format making it unplayable in pretty much everything.

Okay, I’m now convinced that Rocksmith makes guitar harder than it actually is.

Like Guitar Hero somehow was able to turn 4 chord songs that’d take like 5 minutes to learn on the actual…

I guess that’s the thing with Rocksmith. It’s played with a real instrument, y’know, one you have to buy yourself. It’s supposed to teach you how to play for real, and it has advanced stuff too. I thought it would be entertaining and actually teach me something, but instead I’m just kinda doing what I would have been doing with tablature, only more convoluted.

The problem is that a lot of the chord choices are very bizarre and definitely not what the original musicians played. Not in my experience, not at all. I was in the studio for one of the songs in the game. The game’s chording is not correct.

They love to add extra notes into chords that I never see used in practice. They always add a fourth note into 3-note chords. It’s silly.

“Learn guitar in 60 days.” I guess you learn how to play Rocksmith style guitar in 60 days.

I’ll admit, I know shit about music theory, I don’t know any notes on the fretboard, I don’t even understand what a scale is or how it’s applied. I never learned. I have been playing for over 16 years. I played in grunge and screamo bands for years and no one complained. During the late 2000’s when everyone wanted to be the next Yngwie is about the same time where my lack of knowledge became a problem and I had to go “solo”. All my energy went into technical ability, not necessarily note choice. No, my parents didn’t force me to learn piano. No, I don’t know how to play an F sharp pentatonic, sorry dude. No, I can’t read your sheet music, sorry.

I know chord shapes, but I don’t know what they’re called, that’s for sure. I’ve purchased dozens of books and DVD’s and walked away more confused than when I started. The circle of fifths is complete nonsense. So I just continued to do things ‘my’ way, which isn’t exactly productive for song writing. It takes me hours to get instruments to sound good together, whereas the song itself without the accompanying instruments may have took me 20 minutes to compose on a single instrument. Once I try to add in other instruments it all goes to hell.

What is a time signature, anyways? Numerical concepts are an uphill battle for someone with dyscalculia.

I digress. Consider yourself lucky if you ever had the opportunity to take lessons when you were younger, or if your school had a music program. It always pissed me off that my school didn’t have a music program. I would like to know what I’m doing instead of just throwing shit at the wall.

It’s ultimately why I went into music engineering and guitar tech’ing to begin with. It was easier to learn and excel at. Even if I do miss reel to reel tape.

Even if the only purpose of Rocksmith was to learn famous songs, I do not feel like it even accomplishes that. Okay, I finally just played the song with 100% accuracy. Awesome - I just played 5 songs with 100% accuracy! Wow! I could be in a cover band now! Except…

…Without the game’s cues, I can’t remember a single one of those songs. Also, no one else plays the song that way.

I want to know the method behind the composition, not just how to reproduce it.

I truly believe the way music theory is taught is extremely outdated. Can’t someone come up with a better system? It’s nearly 2014, jeez.
